I always find it difficult going from roughs to cleanup; most times there are things in the rough that I just can't duplicate in the cleanup. The drawings also tend to stiffen up. This panel I went a little cleaner than usual; I would prefer to keep things on the rougher side; it better represents what I'm after in a drawing.

Sheee-oot!
That's some damn fine-lookin' work. All digital seems to be the way to go --
Keep rockin',

This is one of the reasons why I stop here every morning. Good stuff!!
I'm loving the rough. Great stuff Ted. I can't wit to see where you take us next.

'"scribble scribble" Yes,....go on..."scribble scribble".
Man, you are the jedi master of the Cintiq!
Ted,
You are real master. When you compare the expression between the clean up and final, there is the slightest change in her expression as though it was 2 photos were shot by a SLR camera 0.5 seconds apart from each other. It is a real subtle difference but changes the composure of the girl.
You should really teach. I have zero artistic skill and I am a non artist but I will sign up for a class in 0.5 seconds if you teach.

Thanks everyone!
moth - i'm doing all the roughs now on the cintiq. it's more flexible and faster.
edog - thanks for makin R&I a regular stop!
j - I hope I can deliver the goods...there are big things planned for the middle and conclusion of the story (none of which will be reavealed here...mwahaha).
charles - you outlined the problem I have with the translation from rough to final; you picked up on the very slight change that happened in the clean up. The rough has a few extra lines near Rose's eye which don't really belong in a cleanup, but they contribute to the feel of the drawing and make sense in a rough. The rough has the expression that I really wanted.
Yoou will notice in the new book that some roughs (mostly subtle facial expressions) have been left in because I just can't replicate them in a cleanup.
Thaks again for the teaching suggestion. I would like to teach some day...
Beautiful!! Love the progression from start to finish. Very inspiring! Damn, makes me want to do a comic!!
Ted
I appreciate you posting these PROCESS pics. I also get a kick out of it when you post those sequence breakdowns of movies, in your other blog.

Mandrews out
Thanks guys!
mandrews - I'm planning to compile the two parts into one book with a bunch of extra stuff that I had to cut (inspired by your epic version of Colossus).
The war stuff Mark's talking about is the battle of Cold Harbor which I just finished roughing (16 pages of action, yikes!), but I won't be posting any of that cause I want there to be SOME surprises! Ok, well maybe a rough or two. : )
great post!
what software do you use?
weno - thanks, I use Photoshop and a Cintiq tablet.
