A Page in the making Part 2
This is a continuation of this post where I was cosndensing two pages down to one to make the story move along quicker. I thought I might as well show the next step in the process. Below I've done a second rough and addded a preliminary tone pass. There are still things that need fixing, but this gives me a good idea at what the final page will look like.

Wow, looking great Ted. How do find making the transistion to film to comics in terms of dealing with the flexible aspect ratios of comics and how that effects how you approach composition?
Thanks James. The transition was tough at first. I instinctively wanted to draw everything in a 2.39 aspect ratio.
Breaking out of the film frame was like trying to force a square peg into a round hole, but I surrounded myself with comics like Hellboy and the brilliantly staged Volunteer (drawn by Benoit Springer). The rules for composition are the same; use the entire frame, make it interesting with pos/neg space, focus the eye, etc. All the things we do in film making.
Oh, another thing was the word balloons, in the first book I kept forgetting to leave room for them (duh). As time went on I started to remember to allow room and then eventually began to explore new compositional ideas because of the balloons.
Great work!!Thanks for sharing!!
Ted, great work! Lovin' how you're exploring the compositions.
thanks guys!
Hey Ted,
You are making leaps and bounds as a storyteller. I'm looking forward to the next installment of Rose and Isabel.
Regarding the page at hand, I think you could reconsider the last panel. It's upsetting the rhythm of your page.
Cheers,
KB
T,
yeah man, looks awesome.
the easiest thing for me when doing ballons is to just draw and compse them into the compositions in the thumbnails, and use the ballon as a shape composed in the frame with all the other elements as opposed to just thinking of it as a floating white blob you add at the end. this is something mike mignola told me a while back he does. im not going to agrue with him, but in the end, whats important is whatever works for the individual.

Whew! BeYUtiful stuff man! Very inspiring. Everytime I come to this site I pick up a pencil afterwards.
mystic 7 - thanks, the page is currently being reworked a bit.
ovi - I welcome advice from Mr. Mignola anytime! I've been looking at a lot of Hellboy during the making of R&I, to try and glean some of his mastery of layout.
edog - thanks! i'm glad to hear you find the posts inspiring!
Woh! I like the bold strong lines here!!
