Bernet and Brushes

I have been constantly turning to "TEX - L'homme D'Atlanta" by Jordi Bernet for inspiration; his drawings have a looseness and accuracy at the same time which I can't get enough of. His interplay of light and shadow is fantastic, as are the compositions, and...well, basically everthing about it is cool. I've been playing around in Photoshop a bit to get a digital brush that feels more natural to me and thanks to Mr. Bernet's work, I've been getting closer to the mark. I was also given a different type tip for the Cintiq pen which feels more like scratching on toothy paper; I kind of like it so far. Experiments will continue...here's the first.

Palette

As I'm laying out and roughing the pages for CORA, I'm trying to get some sort of preliminary color down as well. I'm a big fan of Dave Stewart's work and the use of color in European comics so I'm using those as inspiration as well as theories I've picked up on over the years (I love complementaries next to each other). I'm going for simplification but also trying to make sophisticated color choices (especially if the scene is a subtle one).

Here are some studies from the beginning of the book.

CORA is underway

I'm going to start documenting the making of the book very early this time; I'm planning to go to print with it in May of 2008 for a June delivery and July release. Like the last book, I'll be working from a simple outline and various notes I've scratched down here and there and will go straight ahead page by page. I'll rough as many pages as I need to tell the story and my best guess is that it'll clock in at 225-250 pages.

Here we go!

2007

Happy New Year everyone!

Well, 2007 is already shaping up to be a busy year creatively...very soon I'll be diving into a story for Afterworks 3, then barreling full steam ahead on the Cora book and starting on a new project here at the job. After a 6 week hiatus from work, I'm energized and can't wait to get rolling. I hope you are all rested and the creative juices are flowing!

Here's a little something held over from last year. -T
