photo inspiration

When drawing for the Rose and Isabel and Cora books, inspiration comes in all forms. The latest is this picture of Japanese pianist virtuoso Hiromi. I love the intensity that's been captured.

Xythyxx needs your help

UPDATE

: thanks everyone for your votes! Because of you, Xythyxx has made it to the final round! He defeated Pink Dynamo in a no-holds barred grudge match that ended in a coin toss because votes were tied between the two gladiators! Keep an eye on Fist-a-cuffs for the next challenge, which will be tag-teams with 4 artists contributing to each matchup.

This is a bit of a departure from my normal posts but my gladiator fighting over at Sam Hiti's Fist-A-Cuffs needs your help.
Funny this should happen at March Madness time because right now is the final four, Xythyxx is down by two votes, and voting ends tomorrow! So run to Sam Hiti's Fist-A-Cuffs and vote for Xythyxx! (once you get there scroll down until you see the drawing matchups).

Thank you!

Cora update

Moving right along...I hit a bit of a story snag this week but whenever such things occur I put in a call to story peers, this time my brother John as well as Mark Andrews and we talk scenarios. Cora's motivation at the end of the first act of the story wasn't quite hitting for me and even though the outcome was the same, there were at least 3 ways to get there. John and Mark gave their opinions and we discussed other possibilities but the consensus was the same. So I cut a few pages (including the ones from the last post -ouch) but in my opinion the new pages taking their place are better.

This is one of the brutal tasks that I've learned to accept from being a storyboard artist -- not being afraid to tear down your drawings if they don't suit the story, especially when they're ones you're fond of.

I'm in a much better place to move forward now, so onward!

color roughs

I'm roughing color pages at a rate of about 10 a week. Here are a couple of the latest-- I'm focusing on color transitions across pages, and also trying to push the color beyond what I would normally do.

I've also posted something new over at the other blog Current Flavor.

Work in progress

Here's a screenshot of some of the most recent rough pages. I'm really building up steam on the book and getting into a groove with the story, layouts and color. My plan is to have the whole book (about 200 pages) roughed by comic-con.

These are pages 38, 39 and 40.

I shouldn't be doing this, but...

Here is the first rough for the CORA cover. This is right off the top of my head, colors just thrown down to see what it would look like...I shouldn't really be putting half-baked ideas up here, but what the heck. I will try to come up with something more unique in the weeks to come. Comments and suggestions welcome.

(just noticed Liz Caster's hat (on far left side) looks more like a 70's fro, so I'll fix that somehow.)
