Second pass (UPDATE 4/23)

The layout (first pass) of CORA book 2 is almost finished. In this first pass, all of the layouts are drawn, a lot of the dialogue is written, and pacing issues are worked out (for the most part). In the second pass, the layouts are refined, rough color ideas are laid down in preparation for the final clean up and painting phase; dialogue is re-written, layouts modified and the storytelling and shot selection are pushed.

Below is the first page of the new book, showing the first (layout) pass and the second (rough) pass. The first pass was merely the idea of an owl over a black background. For the second pass the positioning of the owl has changed and the black background has changed to color with a graphic accent in the left corner. This is close to the image that will be tied down for the final.

UPDATE: directly below is the final page. There is still an issue for me to resolve with the bottom left side of the owl; I'll choose whether or not to address this later after the pages are all finished.

i hope you don't mind my taking a look. the top one is great. i love the idea of the owl against a black bg but looking at the top image i think the green with the black accent is stronger. really nice. My puppy on facebook is named Goethe, btw.

Nice -- your symbolism is rockin'. Keep going!

Ted,

I definately like the second pass of the owl. With the brighter yellow against the darker background, the owl is very menacing. You get the feeling.

With the new positioning of second pass, is the owl in a metamorphosis state to something more disturbing? Can't wait to buy the book to find out.

very nice man!

although i kinda like some of the looseness in the 2nd pass image as opposed to the final.

but nice either way. i just really like when you finish your work with a looser line.

matches the rustic/western nature of the story better for me.

Thanks everyone!

Ovi - Thanks - I like to keep things loose. I am more comfortable and happy with my drawings when they're loose because more of the energy and emotion comes out in the roughs. I'm not a great "clean up" artist. The problem I'm having is that when the work is printed, I feel it can come off as rough, (some called it "scratchy") having the feel of unfinished work. It's something I'm still wrestling with-- how to create loose and rough drawings that look like finished art.

Jordi Bernet is the man when it comes to loose and appealing style. He makes it look effortless!

T,

i was going through the same thing when i was doing PIGTALE. i eventually just started "cleaning" up my work with a ballpoint pen and then eventually just a dark pencil so that it was "cleaned up" but not "clean and sleek".

there is nothing wrong with the clean up you did, i just like the rough feel of the others. i know there are a few digital brushes you could try in PS to clean up and see if it leaves the tooth you are looking for.

at any rate, looks great either way.

Ah, that owl reminds me of Twin Peaks, "The owls are not what they seem..." The style reminds me of P. Craig Russell. Very good stuff. I am also looking forward to the the second Cora book. Thank you for making engaging art!
